What Are NFPA Cylinders?
NFPA cylinders are hydraulic or pneumatic actuators that meet the standards established by the National Fluid Power Association. NFPA standards cover features including mounting styles and dimensions, rod and bore configurations, and piston seal styles. These standards not only provide better protection but also allows for part interchangeability.

Common Types of NFPA Cylinders

A4 Heavy Duty Pneumatic Cylinders: These NFPA pneumatic cylinders can withstand high-pressure situations and are the best choice when hydraulics is not possible.
L4 Permanently Lubricated Pneumatic Cylinders: These cylinders have a constant supply of lubrication fluid and are ideal for long stroke applications. They are a great alternative to inline oilers.
A2 Light Duty Pneumatic Cylinders: The light-duty pneumatic cylinder can withstand high-pressure, high-production work environments and is suitable for all types of automation technology.
NFPA Tie Rod Cylinders
NFPA tie rod cylinders are suitable to handle high-demand, high-pressure working conditions. Double-acting cylinders are available in bore sizes from 2 inches to 4 inches, with stroke length availability of up to 32 inches. Some cylinders come with features including extra cushioning and pivot, flange, and clevis mounting options.

H6 Heavy Duty Hydraulic Cylinders
Yates Cylinders offers an H6 steel tie rod hydraulic cylinder used in various industrial applications that require consistent clamping, stamping, and forging to complete projects. This heavy-duty hydraulic cylinder comes in bore sizes from 1.5 to 24 inches and up to 3,000 pounds per square inch. These cylinders are offered in 20 mounting styles and come with a limited warranty.
A4 Heavy Duty Pneumatic Cylinders
A4 heavy-duty pneumatic cylinders are an excellent alternative to hydraulics. Yates offers NFPA pneumatic cylinders in bore sizes ranging from 1.5 to 24 inches, with up to 3,000 PSI load capacity. Our heavy-duty cylinders come in 23 mounting options, and our NFPA devices are interchangeable with JIC models.
A4 heavy-duty pneumatic cylinders are commonly used in the plastic, steel mill, and paper manufacturing industries. These cylinders are typically used in tandem with automation equipment to allow for repeated clamping, forging, bending, and stamping processes.
H4 Medium Duty Hydraulic Cylinders
Built sturdily for medium-duty applications, Yates offers an H4 medium-duty hydraulic cylinder ideal for the plastic, paper and pulp, and steel mill industries. These cylinders are built for medium-duty manufacturing processes, including stamping, forging, shearing and bending. Our medium-duty hydraulic cylinders are offered in bore sizes from 1.5 to 20 inches, with up to 1,500 PSI capability. All Yates cylinders are manufactured in Michigan.
L4 Permanently Lubricated Pneumatic Cylinders
L4 lubricated pneumatic cylinders are manufactured for high-pressure applications. These cylinders are suitable for high-cycle, high-production industrial applications. Yates Cylinders offers lubricated pneumatic cylinders with bore sizes ranging from 1.5 to 24 inches, with 250 PSI capability. These cylinders come with a limited warranty and are available in 23 mounting styles.
A2 Light Duty Pneumatic Cylinders
A2 light duty pneumatic cylinders are suited for automation applications where hydraulics is not preferred. These NFPA pneumatic cylinders come in bore sizes from 1.5 to 8 inches, with up to 250 PSI capability. Yates offers a limited warranty and 20 mounting options. This cylinder is not suitable for heavy-duty applications.
H2 Light Duty Hydraulic Cylinders
H2 light duty hydraulic cylinders are an ideal option for any application in which lightweight cylinders are required. These cylinders are offered in bore sizes from 1.5 to 8 inches, with 400 PSI capacity.
