Tie rod cylinders are used across a wide range of industries, including steel production, automotive manufacturing, material handling, machine tools, plastics processing, paper mills, industrial automation, and other heavy-duty manufacturing applications. Their versatility and durability make them suitable for both standard and custom hydraulic systems.

When selecting a tie rod cylinder, it's important to consider factors such as bore size, stroke length, operating pressure, mounting style, rod diameter, load requirements, environmental conditions, and duty cycle. Choosing the correct specifications helps maximize performance, reliability, and service life. If you're unsure which cylinder is right for your application, our engineering team can help.

Yes. Yates proudly manufactures tie rod cylinders at our headquarters in St. Clair Shores, Michigan. Our experienced team designs and manufactures hydraulic and pneumatic cylinders for industrial applications throughout North America.

Yes. One of the primary advantages of tie rod cylinders is their serviceability. Because the cylinder can be disassembled, worn seals, rods, bearings, and other components can often be repaired or replaced instead of replacing the entire cylinder. Yates also offers comprehensive hydraulic cylinder repair services for many cylinder styles and manufacturers.

Yes. Yates offers replacement parts for many of our tie rod cylinder models, including seal kits, rods, pistons, bearings, and other service components. Our team can also assist in identifying the correct replacement parts based on your cylinder's specifications.

Tie Rod Cylinders

Tie rod cylinders are a reliable, serviceable solution for hydraulic and pneumatic applications that require consistent linear force and repeatable motion. Built with threaded steel tie rods that secure the cylinder barrel and end caps, these cylinders can be disassembled for maintenance, repair, and component replacement.

Yates manufactures a wide range of hydraulic and pneumatic tie rod cylinders for industrial equipment and machinery. Our standard product lines include heavy-duty hydraulic, medium-duty hydraulic, light-duty hydraulic, heavy-duty pneumatic, permanently lubricated pneumatic, and light-duty pneumatic cylinders.

With a range of bore sizes, pressure ratings, mounting configurations, and NFPA-interchangeable designs, Yates tie rod cylinders can be used in applications ranging from manufacturing and automation to machinery, material handling, and other industrial systems.

Applications of Tie Rod Cylinders

Tie rod cylinders are found in a handful of industries where equipment prioritizes consistent force and repeatable motion without complications. Some of the most prominent examples include:

MANUFACTURING

Tie rod cylinders can be found in most manufacturing facilities—specifically when it comes to presses, injection molding machines, and automated assembly lines. Common uses include:

  • Driving press rams for forming or stamping parts
  • Clamping molds in plastic injection systems
  • Powering pick-and-place or positioning systems in automation

MACHINERY

Tie rod cylinders are commonly used in industrial machinery and machine tools, including:
  • Metal forming and bending machines
  • Cutting and shearing equipment
  • Packaging and processing machines

FOOD PROCESSING

Due to their reliable performance and clean design, tie rod cylinders are found in high-speed automated production environments, such as:
  • Conveyer and product handling systems
  • Packaging, sealing, and labeling equipment
  • Mixing, pressing, and portioning machinery

FEATURES & BENEFITS OF TIE ROD CYLINDERS

Tie rod cylinders are designed to deliver reliable performance without overcomplicating maintenance or replacement. Their construction makes them a practical choice for many operations. They come with multiple features and benefits, including:

Ease of Maintenance

Tie rod cylinders are built to be serviced. The bolted construction allows the cylinder to be disassembled, which gives direct access to internal components such as seals, rods, and pistons. This results in:
  • Faster repair turnaround
  • Reducted downtime
  • Lower maintenance costs

DURABILITY

The tie rod design ensures consistent clamping force across the cylinder, which helps maintain alignment under pressure. This ensures:
  • Reliable performance across repeated cycles
  • Reduced component wear
  • Extended service life

Versatility

Tie rod cylinders may be configured to fit a wide range of applications within various industries. With multiple bore sizes, stroke lengths, and mounting styles available, they are well-suited for:
  • Lifting, pushing, and pulling applications
  • Stationary and mobile equipment
  • Both light-duty and moderate-duty systems

NFPA Tie Rod Cylinders

NFPA tie rod cylinders are built to standards established by the National Fluid Power Association, ensuring consistency across dimensions, mounting styles, and port sizes.

This standardization ensures cylinders are easily interchangeable between manufacturers, making it easier to replace or upgrade cylinders without redesigning your system.

NFPA cylinders are available in both hydraulic and pneumatic configurations and are commonly manufactured from aluminum, steel, or stainless steel. All NFPA cylinders, also referred to as Joint Industry Council cylinders, come with four tie rods secured with end caps.

Tie Rod Cylinder Repair & Replacement

Yates Cylinders provides comprehensive tie rod cylinder repair, rebuild, and replacement services to keep your equipment running efficiently.

We sell all varieties of cylinder parts, including small and large bore options. We also manufacture hydraulic cylinders, all of which are designed to NFPA standards. If you need to replace or repair an NFPA cylinder, we have the manufacturing mechanisms in place to quickly and affordably repair the cylinder. If you need a replacement part for your cylinder to get your manufacturing process running again, we can sell you the part and repair any other malfunctioning cylinder mechanisms.

Yates Cylinders also builds customized cylinders to be used in various industrial applications, including manufacturing, construction, mobile machinery, and more. No matter your industry, we can design a tie rod hydraulic cylinder to automate or simplify your industrial process. All of the custom cylinders we build are affordable and built to NFPA standards to allow for easy repair in the future.

Custom Tie Rod Cylinders

Standard NFPA tie rods cover a wide range of applications—but they aren’t built for every situation. When your equipment, environment, or operational needs fall outside the norm, a custom cylinder may be the most effective solution. This can be done through our tie rod product configurator or by contacting our team. You may want to consider a custom cylinder if you have:

space or mounting constraints

If your equipment has limited space or unique measurements, a catalog cylinder may not fit properly. Custom designs allow:
  • Modified mounting styles (trunnion, clevis, flange variations)
  • Adjusted overall length or collapsed dimensions
  • Integration into tight or unconventional layouts

Non-Standard Stroke or Bore Requirements

Not every application fits neatly into standard sizes. If you’re:
  • Overextending a standard stroke
  • Compromising on force due to bore limitations
A custom cylinder ensures the correct force of output and stroke length for your exact application without any workarounds.

Extreme Operating Conditions

Standard cylinders aren’t always designed for harsh environments. Custom solutions are often the right choice when dealing with:
  • High or low temperature extremes
  • Corrosive environments (chemicals, washdown, outdoor exposure)
  • Contaminants like dust, debris, or moisture

Integration with Specialized Equipment

Some systems require cylinders to work seamlessly with other components. Custom cylinders can be designed to match:
  • Existing hydraulic systems and pressure ratings
  • OEM specifications
  • Unique motion or control requirements
