what is a welded cylinder?

A welded hydraulic cylinder is built with a fully welded body, where the bottom end cap is welded to the barrel. The rod end cap or head is threaded into the barrel or bolted to the barrel on larger bore cylinders. Ports are welded on and can be positioned at various locations along the cylinder body.

This creates a more compact, rigid design that is well-suited for high pressure, high load, and space-constrained applications. Due to the housing being welded, these cylinders can handle greater stress and internal impact without compromising their structural integrity.

Welded cylinders are frequently found in mobile and heavy-duty equipment, where durability and performance are prioritized over ease of disassembly. Welded cylinders are available in WS (Welded Severe Duty), WH (Welded Heavy Duty), WM (Welded Medium Duty), and WP (Pneumatic Heavy Duty) configurations. applications of welded cylinders

Welded cylinders are the go-to in demanding environments where equipment is exposed to heavy loads, shock, and continuous use.

Agriculture

In agricultural equipment such as tractors, loaders, and tillage equipment, welded cylinders are used for:

  • Front-end loader lift and tilt functions
  • Hydraulic steering systems
  • Heavy implement control

Construction

Welded cylinders are widely used in excavators, bulldozers, loaders, and backhoes, where they power:
  • Boom, arm, and bucket movement
  • Blade positioning
  • Outriggers and stabilizers

Forestry & Mining

In harsh environments like forestry and mining, welded cylinders are used in:
  • Log loaders and skidders
  • Drilling and excavation equipment
  • Hauling and material transport systems

Industrial & Mobile Machinery

Welded cylinders are commonly used in specialized mobile equipment and industrial machinery, including:
  • Road maintenance equipment
  • Oil & gas field machinery
  • Custom mobile hydraulic systems

Why Choose a Welded Cylinder?

When an operation involves heavy loads, requires highly durable equipment, or has limited installation space, a welded cylinder is often the better choice. Instead of adapting your equipment to fit a standard design, welded cylinders are the solution in systems where the performance requirements are more specific.

Welded cylinders are especially useful in mobile equipment and demanding environments where components are exposed to ongoing stress, impact, or continuous cycling. In these applications, long-term reliability outweighs the need for quick disassembly.

Welded cylinders also make sense when a tailored configuration is needed. Their design allows for flexibility in dimensions and integration, making them a strong fit for equipment that goes beyond standard cylinder layouts.

FEATURES & BENEFITS OF WELDED CYLINDERS

Welded cylinders are typically selected when equipment needs to perform under tougher conditions beyond what standard designs call for. Their design supports a range of practical advantages that show up in day-to-day operation, maintenance, and equipment integration.

Application Flexibility

Welded cylinders are often engineered for specific applications, which allows for greater customization. This flexibility makes these cylinders ideal for integration into both OEM machinery and replacement applications. They may be configured for:
  • Custom mounting styles and configurations
  • Specific stroke lengths and rod requirements
  • Integration into specialized or non-standard layouts

Design Advantages

Welded cylinders are built with a fully integrated body that eliminates external tie rods, resulting in a shorter and more streamlined overall design. This makes them especially useful in applications where installation space is limited.
  • Improved fit in compact equipment design
  • Better protection of internal components in exposed environments
  • More efficient use of available space within machinery

Durability

The welded construction provides a rigid, one-piece body designed to handle high pressure, shock loads, and continuous operation. This leads to:
  • Reliable performance in high-load applications
  • Resistance to vibration and impact stress
  • Long service life in harsh operating environments

WELDED CYLINDER REPAIR & REPLACEMENT

Yates Cylinders provides comprehensive welded cylinder repair, rebuild, and replacement services to keep your equipment operating at full efficiency. Our team focuses on providing you with the design needed to fit your operation, resulting in restored performance and extended service life.

While welded cylinders are not designed with the same disassembly features as tie rod cylinders, our team has the equipment and expertise to properly service, reseal, and restore cylinders of all makes and models. If a repair is not the most efficient option, we can manufacture a replacement cylinder built to match your existing specifications—or better.

Yates Cylinders also designs and manufactures custom welded cylinders for industrial and mobile applications, including construction equipment, material handling systems, heavy machinery, and more.

Whether you need a direct replacement or a redesigned cylinder to improve performance, we provide application-specific solutions meant to meet the demands of your operation. Contact our team directly or use our form to request a quote.

CUSTOM WELDED CYLINDERS

While welded cylinders are designed to handle a wide range of applications, there are situations where off-the-shelf options don’t fully align with equipment requirements. In these cases, a custom hydraulic cylinder ensures the design is matched directly to your application. You may want to consider a custom cylinder solution if you have the following:

Demanding Operation Conditions

In situations where cylinders are exposed to extreme pressure, heavy shock loads, or demanding environments, standard designs may not provide the level of protection or durability needed. A custom cylinder will solve this issue through:
  • Enhanced rod and barrel materials for higher durability
  • Application-specific sealing systems for contamination control
  • Reinforced designs for heavy usage

Performance or Equipment-Specific Requirements

Some systems require hydraulic performance that goes beyond standard bore, stroke, or force designs. Custom cylinders ensure the unit is engineered to match the exact operating requirements of the machine or application. This will provide you with:
  • Non-standard bore and stroke combinations
  • Custom porting for hydraulic system compatibility
  • Design adjustments to meet OEM or specialized equipment specs

Space or Integration Limitations

In compact or highly engineered systems, some equipment designs may not align with standard configurations. A custom welded cylinder can be built around available space and mounting constraints, providing:
  • Modified overall length/envelope dimensions
  • Custom mounting configurations designed to match existing equipment
  • Optimized design for tight/restricted installations

Sustainability

Yates welded hydraulic cylinders and welded pneumatic cylinders perform in a vast range of manufacturing applications. Manufactured exclusively at our Austell, Georgia facility, our welded cylinders are ideal for your medium and heavy duty applications, including packing and extreme milling.
